How Fake Tan Works

Ever wondered how fake tan works? The main ingredient in tanning products is DHA which contains a sugar derived from raspberry. When it comes into contact with the outermost layer of the skin, the sugar reacts with natural skin proteins (amino acids) and oxygen from the air which causes the reaction that turns our skin brown. Formulas should be left on the skin for 8 hours in order to fully develop.

Because the process only occurs on the top layer of skin, the tan then fades after 5-7 days in keeping with the normal skin shedding cycle.

An important thing to remember in regards to self-tanning is that everyone’s skin is different, and fake tan will react differently depending on your skin type. Fake tans only run the risk of looking unnatural if you have a tan with too much DHA in it for your skin type, which is why we have formulated our products to suit all tones; if you’re looking for a darker tan, simply apply more regularly.

The day before your tan

Remove any unwanted hair the day before applying your tan to allow pores plenty of time to close, tan in your pores will leave you with a ‘dotty’ finish

Paint your nails and toenails, particularly if you have acrylic extensions! Not only will this leave you feeling even more pampered but it will also prevent your nails and cuticles from being stained.

Buff away dead skin cells to reveal the ultimate smooth base for your tan. Pay particular attention to dry areas such as elbows, knees and feet. Then use a moisturiser to rehydrate your skin and leave your skin feeling silky and smooth. The pH-balanced formula will also encourage a better result from your tan.

On the day of your tan

On the day of your tan, don’t apply deodorant, perfume or body lotion as these act as a barrier and stop self tan from developing properly.

I will apply a thin layer of moisturiser to dry areas only, such as elbows, knees and feet in order to prevent the tan grabbing onto dry skin.

Have some loose dark clothing on hand to put on afterwards whilst your tan develops.

After your tan

There are plenty of things that you can do at home to increase the longevity of your spray tan or self tan. With the right aftercare, you can expect your tan to last 5-7 days.

Do’s Don’ts
Shower after eight hours to reveal your gorgeous developed colour Go to the gym or get wet during the development period. No washing up!
Stay in the shower until the water runs clear, if there is any guide colour left on your skin it will rub off onto your clothes Wear tight clothes – as these will rub your tan off and lead to a patchy developed tan
Moisturise daily to enhance and prolong your tan Rub your skin after washing the guide colour off, pat dry instead to help your tan last longer
Start to exfoliate after 4 days to encourage an even wear off Wear white! Although the tan will come off in the washing machine, it could leave a mark on sensitive materials
Remember to use SPF – a fake tan won’t protect your skin from harmful rays Use skincare/body products in the development time. Perfumes and chemicals can react with the tan, causing it to turn green
